Reviews

  1. This rod is a fine fishing tool with ideal action for the all-around techniques demanded from a 5-weight. It’s fast enough to cast for great distance in the wind, but flexible enough for roll casting, line mending and fighting fish on light tippet. On the casting pond at ICAST, I played with several fly lines and found the Rio Gold to be, by far, the best choice. Lines with shorter heads seemed a little bouncy. Lighter lines, such as the Rio Lightline and SA Trout Taper, seemed a little disconnected. The Rio Gold has the combination of weight and head length to load the Asquith 590-4 and stay engaged.

  2. I felt like this rod loaded at a distinct spot about 1/3 of the rod length above the cork. Load and unload was predictable and stability with line in the air was superb. This rod immediately made me think the NRX LP 9 foot 5 weight (one of the best Gloomis rods period) and the NRX 9 foot 5 weight were meshed together and made lighter. The action of this rod was progressive and gave you the feeling that the entirety of the blank was involved in the cast. Another great 5 weight in a very competitive 5 weight market. For the dedicated Loomis angler this is your next 5 weight.

  3. This is my primary rod for my drift boat on the Delaware system out East. Long technical casts that need to be accurate at distance and drag free. This rod has unbelievable stability and feel at distance. I also own the radian which is an excellent rod in its own right but the Asquith owns the distance with control category with it super fast recovery and flex profile!

  4. There are high end fly rods and then there are the Asquith rods. These rods are in a category unto themselves. While there are certainly rods that compete or possibly best this rod, there is not a rod that casts so light that it almost feels whimsical in hand. The spiral X technology is real, and it makes for a rod that casts powerfully with control and empowering confidence. The best line for this rod is the SA Amplitude Infinity and together they are mind reading and pinpoint accurate at all distances. The price tag of the Asquith rods is cost prohibitive to some, but this is a Ferrari fine fly rod and it could be yours for $1100.

  5. I would be happy to have this rod in my hand when fishing to technical fish on my local tailwater in windy conditions that do not allow me to fish my 4wt. It is a light, smooth, delicate casting rod. In heavier nymphing scenarios, I would prefer to have the NRX+ in my hands. I believe that this rod is most happy when paired with a Rio Elite Technical Trout, throwing dry flies to spooky trout under scenarios that are not suitable for a fast action 4wt.
