  1. Sage 591-4 X: With the bottom of the blank buried in a fighting butt, we expected this model to be stiffer and less sensitive than the 590-4. In fact, we could detect no difference whatsoever. If you like a 5-weight with a fighting butt, you’ll just love the casting feel and loop control of this model.

Line pairings: Rio Perception, Rio Gold, Rio Aqualux, SA MPX, SA Trout Taper (regular or Wavelength), SA GPX Sharkwave, SA Sonar Sink Tips

  2. For the X rods Sage decided to offer the 9 foot five weight with a fighting butt. Sometimes this little addition can change the action of the rods (I felt like it did in the 6 weight) but I couldn’t detect any of this between the 590 and the 591. Think of them as the same rod, only one of them has a Saltwater safe reel seat and a small fighting butt. This isn’t a consideration in the type of 5 weight fishing that I do, but others might be into this option.
