  1. Sage 697-4: Perhaps even more than the 690-4, the 697-4 feels “nymphy.” It lacks the magic wand lightness of the 597-4, but the tip and tip-mid drive through the casts for power and command with heavy headed lines, strike indicators and lead. This is a wonderful “open loop style” nymph rod, although for steelhead I would personally choose the 6100-4.

Lines: Rio Gold, Rio Grand, Rio Nymph Taper, SA MPX, SA GPX Sharkwave, SA Mastery Distance Taper, any classic steelhead line and all 6-weight sink tips

  2. I also enjoyed the 697 but I believe this rod has a more purpose driven action. While it still cast the line very well overhead like the rest of the X rods, the rod told me that it was built to carry an indicator with nymphs or a real deal streamer. If an all-around 9 foot 6 inch trout rod is the object of your desires check out the X 597. The 697’s extra length wasn’t noticed through the cast, but the action was tuned toward nymphing, loading slightly lower on the blank and getting a little more of the full length of the blank into the cast. This is absolutely ideal for a nymph rod. Roll casting was phenomenal and it mended easily and precisely. For the trout fisherman looking for a big river nymph gun or a rod to serve double duty as a summer run indicator rod this is a top contender.
