  1. 8100-4 X: As I found with the long 5-weights, the 9’6” rod is much sweeter than the 10-footer. The 8100-4 X has tremendous power, but the butt section is necessarily stiff and quashes any inkling of casting sensitivity and feel. In the last decade, the 10’ 7-weight has surpassed the 10’ 8-wt in popularity for single handed steelheading. This rod should be chosen by anglers who have historically fished 10’ 9-weights.

Line pairings: Rio InTouch Salmon/Steelhead, SA Mastery Steelhead, Rio InTouch Indicator, all freshwater sink tips from SA and Rio

  2. This is a really stout fly rod and definitely felt like it was built to be a heavy duty salmon/steelhead single hander. As a series I liked the 9’6” rods over the 10 foot rods across the board. The 896 is so sweet and really blew me away, the 8100 just felt like more fly rod than I would ever find myself needing. Like the rest of the X rods, it was powerful, flat casting and very easy to get the line out and where you want it. This rod is for the guy who wants the heaviest duty 10 foot 8 weight out there.
