Scott Tidal Series 909-4 fly rod    9’0″ 9-weight, 4-piece

The Scott Tidal 909-4 is a workhorse at the heart of this fly rod series, ideal for windy bonefish and redfish flats, permit, barracuda, stripers, roosterfish and salmon.

  1. After casting the 7 and 8 in this series, I wasn’t a bit surprised that the 9-wt was awesome. 9-weights have always been one of Scott’s strengths. The Tidal 909-4 is lighter and more crisp than almost any other 9 weight I have cast over the years, the exceptions being hall-of-fame fly rods: Scott Radian and S4S, and the Loomis NRX.

When cast side-by-side with equivalent models in the S4S and Radian Series, the Tidal kept up until I really leaned on it. When you need the most power, Radian and S4S can go to another level. The Radian and S4S will have advantages in fighting fish, too, especially deep diving species. In most casting situations, the angler will find the 909-4 to be much more than adequate, possibly spectacular. The Tidal 909-4 is just as good as the 908-4, but the 908-4 gets 5 stars because an 8 weight is the most critical saltwater line weight for flats species.

Fly line recommendation: All the Tidal rods will tolerate a wide variety of fly lines. They flex very evenly and forgive poor timing. Both short and long headed lines will cast well, but I specifically recommend these: Rio Bonefish (not the quickshooter or Redfish, which are a full line weight heavy), SA Bonefish, SA Textured Saltwater and SA Sharkwave Saltwater.
