  1. This is a fine all around 5 weight, and it seemed to perform better with a slightly exaggerated weight forward fly line. The Amplitude Smooth Infinity taper was my favorite on this rod and it seemed to help the tip follow through and clean up the loop through the finish of the cast. Despite being a quicker rod on the recovery scale, this rod had a noticeable load period that felt like the rod was winding up. Not the best rod for a quick stroke caster, but a fine pairing for a caster who appreciates a distinct pause to the cast. I personally prefer the Pure 9 foot 5, but the AIR 9 foot 5 has a little more power in reserve.

  2. This rod felt good in hand and was pleasurable to cast. It possesses a light swing weight and did have a smoother flex into the mid-section vs. the 4 wt. It could also handle the longer distance casts. Very nice loop control at a variety of ranges.

  3. I re-wrote my review for this rod after casting it with an SA Amplitude Smooth Trout Taper line. I first tried it with a Rio Gold and found it bouncy and soft up to about 40 feet. The 4 parts of the fly rod just didn’t feel like they were working together. I couldn’t find a sweet spot at any distance. Something was wrong with the equation and it turned out to be the fly line. With the Amp Smooth Trout Taper, the rod feels lighter throughout the casting stroke and generates noticeably more line speed from 25-60 feet. The loop shape is ideal for dry flies and light nymphs, but the rod doesn’t offer the overall command and loop control that I get from my Scott and Sage 5-weights. The Winston feel is ever-present, however. I recommend this rod with the caveat that line pairing is absolutely critical. Fish it with an SA Amplitude Smooth Trout taper or nothing at all.

  4. I was quite impressed with this rod. Winston has done a great job at making their version of a “fast-action” 5wt that is light in hand and a joy to cast. I found that this rod feels much better with an SA Trout taper than a slightly heavier line like the Rio Gold or SA Infinity. The Trout taper really helped quicken up the rod while maintaining the delicate presentation that Winston has come to be known for. This rod is a bit lighter than the 9′ 5wt PURE and would make for a great all-around 5wt. Though I would not call this a true “fast action” rod in comparison to say the Scott Radian or the Sage X, it still has plenty of backbone to dump line and handle large fish. This would be a great rod for someone that is looking for a do it all 5 with good feel and great mending capabilities.
