Product Description

The Elite RIO Gold has a taper design that gives incredible loop stability at distance and a front taper that delivers perfect presentation of flies between sizes #2 and #22. With a long head and back taper this line is an excellent all around fly line on rivers and lakes when long casts and complete line control are required.

This line is built with RIO’s low-stretch ConnectCore Plus, resulting in exceptionally smooth, durable fly lines, with the added benefits of incredible levels of sensitivity when casting and fishing, and providing enhanced detection of takes, faster hook sets, and far greater control when playing a fish. In addition, this line is built with SlickCast, RIO’s proprietary coating technology, creating the slickest, most durable fly lines on the market. Lab tests show that lines built with SlickCast have the least amount of friction ever measured in a fly line.

The RIO Gold is the ultimate all round, floating line for the trout fly fisher.

Reviews

  1. The venerable standard and the most fished fly line in the modern era of our sport, this line will remain the Gold standard for most anglers looking for a “do it all” line with a focus on dry flies and dry droppers. It is truly hard to find a rod that the Gold does not cast well on and it is usually the first line we try for our baseline. A 47 foot head in a WF5F, a moderate front taper, a longish level body and a moderately long back taper is the recipe that has made this line such a staple among trout anglers. The level body provides enough mass behind the front taper to deliver larger flies and control them while they’re on the water.

I have to agree with Rio’s claim that the Gold fishes flies from a #2 down to a #22 very well and while I wouldn’t go larger than a #2 with this line, I would definitely fish smaller than a #22. On the R8 Core 590, the Gold is very good, but still a touch tighter along the blank than I prefer. The rod throws very tight, even loops with excellent line speed and the Gold is my preferred line on this rod for a specialized dry fly line. You get a little more load earlier and easier with the Gold compared to the Technical Trout. When I have both lines all the way out of the tip of the rod, I prefer the Technical Trout slightly, but only at distances beyond 70 feet and I don’t put myself that far away from my target unless absolutely required.
