  1. This is the first Scott graphite rod that I would fish side-by-side with my fiberglass rods. We do a ton of small stream fishing in the San Juan Mountains and for me, a true creek rod must be really short and slow-to-medium action to accentuate the special nature of my experience on the creek. This is the best short graphite rod I have ever fished. On the South Fork San Miguel, I found that it cast weightlessly and precisely into pockets and along grassy banks from less than 10 feet to over 30 feet. It is medium action, or even medium-slow, without any sense of being tip-heavy. All I feel is the fly line. The grip distinctly embellishes the feel and perception of lightness, too. It’s a well-contoured classic trout shape scaled down to match the rod, a thoughtful and delightful accent to this terrific, specialized fly rod. Fish it with an SA Trout Expert WF3 (formerly the SA Trout taper).

  2. The 7’4” 3wt Scott GT Series rod is a stellar small water fishing tool. The first thing I noticed when I picked it up is how incredibly light in hand it is. Shorter graphite rods always feel light, but this particular rod feels lightest in class. It is designed for fishing tight quarters, but on longer casts the rod still holds a beautiful loop and remains very stable. Of all the rods in the GT family, the 743/4 throws the tightest loops. Accurate at all distances and a lethal rod for fish in close, the 743/4 is the perfect choice for anyone who wants a short, light line graphite rod for their favorite creek. This is a rod that will handle several different fly lines well, but my favorite from a casting standpoint is the SA Amplitude Expert Trout WF3F. If you’re in the market for a shorter 3wt this rod needs to be on the list.

  3. This is a wonderful little creek rod. While I tend to favor the super slow feel of fiberglass when creeking, I was pleasantly surprised with the light feel and accuracy you get with this rod. It casts really well in close but is capable of throwing a long, tight loop at distance. SA Trout Expert was my favorite line for this rod.

  4. The Scott GT Series 743/4 is a little gem of a light trout rod—one that achieves what every short rod aspires to: behaving like a perfectly scaled-down version of your favorite nine-footer. It’s an ideal example of a true, purpose-built small-stream fly rod. Designed with matched line speed and a casting tempo tailored for intimate waters, the GT 743/4 excels at presenting dry flies to eager trout in tight quarters. The blank offers a crisp recovery without feeling overly fast, and the upper third of the rod delivers that deeply satisfying sensation—like a bowstring settling after a bullseye—as the leader unfurls in perfect rhythm.

Light in weight yet full of personality, this three-weight rod carries a surprising liveliness. It’s a playful, happy rod with just the right measure of seriousness—a thoughtful companion for the angler who values precision and feel over brute force.

Both the Scientific Anglers Trout Expert and Rio Technical Trout lines pair beautifully with this rod. The Trout Expert brings a touch more finesse, while the Technical Trout adds a hint of substance to the delivery—differences distinct enough to feel, but perhaps splitting hairs.

In essence, the Scott GT 743/4 is made for anglers who appreciate the art of the perfect cast, the beauty of a small wild trout, and the joy of fishing with a tool that enhances every moment on the water.

  5. This rod is an absolute blast, a super fun little creek rod that does exactly what you want in tight quarters. It loads easily with just a few feet of line out, making it a breeze to throw short accurate casts under overhangs or along cutbanks. I found that the Rio Technical Trout made it feel a bit clunky and didn’t love it on there. However, the Scientific Anglers Trout Expert really performs perfectly on this little stick. That line gives it a lighter feel and speeds up the rod which I really liked.
