Reviews

  1. This is a very interesting little fly rod. It is insanely light in hand but almost feels a little too light in my opinion. It feels slightly disconnected in close but tightens up a little bit at distance. This rod would make for a good small water dry fly rod for the angler that prefers a slightly stiffer rod. I cast this rod with a handful of different lines and this rod definitely prefers a slightly heavier line. Consider the SA Amplitude Smooth Creek Trout WF3F for short distance fishing. The Rio Gold is a better option if you’re making longer casts.

  2. To be fair to this miniaturized Helios, I am traditionally skeptical of graphite 3 weights under 8’ in length. They have to have very fine with perfect tapers to achieve a smooth bend when they get this short. I don’t believe I had the right line either, a Rio Gold didn’t kick the rod into gear until about 20 feet. My line choice would be a Rio Creek or SA Creek Trout line. Both have short heads that put the right bend in a short fly rod. Remarkably light in the hand, you get the sense that the cork is far and away the main contributor to weight. A very small and light reel along with one of those creek style lines will tune this rod up just right for the folks who like little versions of their favorite 5 weight to carry creekside.

  3. The Helios 7’6” 3-wt loads and casts compactly with a Rio Gold in the 25’ range, but there is a disconnect between the tip and butt section that creates a distinct hinging feel, forcing the rod to flex the same amount regardless of how much line you’re trying to cast. A heavy-headed line (like the Rio Creek) might cut through all of that, bouncing off the stiff butt section, but the rod feels unrefined with a Rio Technical Trout or SA Trout Taper, great in that 25’ range but poorly loaded shorter or longer. The blank taper lacks sophistication as compared with the Winston Pure 2 3-weights or the Scott GS 773-4.
