  1. The Gold Max is a whole new line and taper philosophy from the Rio Grand that it replaces. The intention of the Gold Max remains the same as the Grand, to help anglers load rod quickly and easily while turning over larger flies and indicators. The difference is the delivery. The Grand concentrated all of its mass at the front of the fly line, held back and smoothed out by a short and aggressive front taper. Literally anyone could turn over a couple of flies and an indicator with this line, but no one could cast precisely with this line. Your flies would spray out either side of their intended target. Not a big deal out of the boat, but mighty aggravating while wading. Enter the Gold Max.

    The taper of this line is rear biased, most of the mass is concentrated towards the rear of the line and the front taper remains long and fairly thick. Thick enough to turn over the stuff you need to, but subtle enough to be able to make a real fly cast in close. The line loads quickly, but does not overload the rod, as you get to about the 30 foot mark, you can feel the extra weight carrying the head and driving the turnover of the front taper. Smooth easy casts and an easy line to shoot for added distance make this line a perfect choice for anyone looking to improve their performance on the water. A perfect line for guided clients out of the boat and walk wading. I never found a place for the Rio Grand in my personal or professional fishing, but I see a real place for the Rio Gold Max. The Gold Max is one line weight over the AFTMA standard and has a 37 foot head length.
