Product Description

Rio Elite Gold XP fly line
½ SIZE HEAVY / EXTRA POWER

Primary: Dry Dropper / Light Indicator
Secondary: Small Dry / Big Dry / Light Streamer

With a mid-length head and half-size heavy design, GOLD XP is the most versatile taper in the GOLD lineup. The added “extra power” relative to classic GOLD gives it the flexibility to excel across the widest variety of techniques and casting lengths, offering truly blended performance. Thanks to its medium-long rear taper and a balanced body for improved turnover of indicators and nymphs, GOLD XP is at home sending drys at distance, running heavier rigs though deeper pools and making quick shots from drift boats. GOLD XP is still perfectly capable of delivering precise, delicate presentations, while its added weight makes the line fish and cast comfortably at shorter distances, typical of wading on smaller waters.

Choose GOLD XP for Extra Power + Extra Versatility.

  • Mid-length head and half-size heavy weight balances the ability to carry line against quickly loading the rod for shorter casts
  • Medium-long rear taper maintains line control for longer presentations, both in the air as well as on the water while mending
  • Balanced body with ample power at the front to turn over the widest range of rigs, plus enough rear power to load rods more deeply for short- to mid-length shots
  • Mid-length front taper for increased versatility: Capable of turning over heavier rigs on shorter leaders powerfully or tiny dry flies on long leaders with finesse

New Elite GOLD XP Taper

Reviews

  1. I am very excited about this new line offering from Rio. I believe it has been missing from their lineup for a little while, not a long while. This line is Rio’s answer to an all-around trout line with a little more powerful delivery. The overall weight of the line is very close the Perception, but the head length is longer and the improvement noticeable. 42 feet of tapered head length in this line hits the sweet spot for shootability and carrying line in the air. Rio measures this line as one-half line weight over the AFTMA standard at 30 feet. I prefer this line on my faster action rods and any rod that I thought the Gold was so close, but just not perfect, found perfection with the XP line.

I literally took the line home and went into the back yard with the 5-weight quiver, was pleasantly unsurprised and felt like the line met my expectations exactly as imagined. I am intimately familiar with the line preferences and performance characteristics of my 5-weights. That doesn’t mean it was the best line for all my rods, what it means is that I was able to treat this brand new line in a more familiar manner than any new line I have tried, like a person you meet and know right away we’re going to get along with famously. On the R8 Core 590, the Gold XP is my exact speed. Any little half a percent issue I had with the Gold on the R8 Core 590 was gone when I rocked the rod back with the Gold XP. The line and rod taper are perfectly matched and both rod and line seem to bring out the best of each other.

I can tell that the minds at Farbank had a goal in mind regarding the R8 Core 590 and Gold XP WF5F and I am very excited to put this combination in the boat. Hoppers, dry dropper, single techy dry and nymph rigs all fall under the purview of this dialed-in pairing. I do not expect this line to replace the Rio Gold, although I do expect it to outsell the Gold initially. Anglers fishing larger flies, but not the largest, and your standard indicator double nymph rig will find real performance advantages with the Gold XP over the Gold. For dedicated dry fly fishing, I would defer to the rod. Some rods will prefer the XP over the Gold and vice versa. More so than ever, the caster has the ability to finely tune their fly rod to their exact performance demands. Give us a call and let us get you dialed in.
