  1. For my tastes, this is the finest short 5-weight Scott has ever produced. What sets it apart from previous sub-8-foot models is that is flexes evenly throughout the blank, casting with the same feel and loop shape from short to long. From any manufacturer, short 5-weights present a design challenge because the transition from the light tip to relatively stiff butt section is steeper than on longer rods. I would expect a 5-weight of this length to have a distinct sweet spot, but to potentially feel out-of-sync at other distances. The GT 7105-4 has a highly refined progressive taper that rewards the angler with intuitive casting and superb feel from zero to around 45 feet. I cast it with an SA Trout Expert, SA Creek Trout and SA Trout GP line. My favorite is the Trout Expert because it preserves the lightness, but this little rod is hard to knock off its game. If you need a heavier line to cast larger dry flies or dry-dropper rigs, don’t hesitate. It still casts evenly at all casting distances and turns over the fly with surprising line speed. This model and the GT 7104-4 are vintage Scott rods that every fan of this manufacturer will recognize at first cast.

  2. This is a very unique little fly rod. It’s not quite as light in the tip as the 7’10” 4wt, but it’s still very light all around. I was shocked at how well it performed at distance. The rod behaved well in close, but really came to life with 30 feet of fly line out. This would make for an amazing dry fly rod at distance on smaller water. I also wouldn’t be afraid to carry this with me for high alpine lake excursions. The short length makes this rod a clear choice for people backpacking or fishing on bike. Just like all of the GT Series rods, the 7105/4 has incredible feel and is a lovely mending rod. It’s short, playful, and a joy to cast. Depending on the intended application, this rod will handle traditional dry fly lines as well as slightly heavier lines. For my personal fishing I would go with a line like the SA Amplitude Trout Expert WF5F.
