  1. Playful and springy, the Pure 2 6’9″ 3-weight has a range of 10′-30′, a dedicated creek rod for the angler who prefers graphite over fiberglass.  There is no characteristic of stiffness in this rod.  Even with 10 feet of line in the air, it flexes into the 2nd section, so you never feel the blunt stubbiness of many shorter graphite rods.  It’s a little more bouncy than the 8’4″ 3-weight and some of my other favorites in the series, but a creek rod of this specialized length needs to be eager to flex with the slightest input from the caster.  This is a great rod on the water, but hard to appraise in the parking lot.  The Winston feel produces an involuntary smile when I cast this little rod.  I generally prefer fiberglass for true creek rods, but I would reach for this rod without hesitation because it fishes with the same playful character.

  2. The Pure 2 6’9″ 3wt is a very fun small water rod. It is stiffer than similar length fiberglass rods but it isn’t nearly as stiff as a lot of graphite rods under 7′. It throws very tight, pretty loops and forms a loop with very little line out. The overall fishability of small creeking rods in close is absolutely imperative, this rod performs better than most short graphite rods in close and is a joy to fish in tight quarters. Though this is designed as a dedicated small water dry fly rod, the 6’9″ 3wt Pure 2 has enough backbone to handle the occasional small nymph with virtually no issues. When thinking about fly lines to pair with this rod, traditional dry fly style tapers should be on the mind. I enjoy both the Rio Elite Technical Trout WF3F and SA Amplitude Double Taper DT3F on this rod and they both pair very nicely with the shorter rod.
