   Nimble with enormous feel, the GT 7104-4 is a versatile small water rod that every angler will love. Many short 4-weights are clubby and indelicate, but this rod displays unique lightness with an unsurpassed connection to the angler’s casting hand. With an SA Trout Expert WF4, it forms natural tight loops from 15 feet to 40 feet with the ability to shoot farther, if desired. This will be our most common suggestion for the rod, but I also tried it with an SA Creek Trout, a heavy-headed line designed for fast action rods, and was very impressed that it didn’t cause the rod to wobble. In fact, the heavier line slowed the action in a pleasing way and the fly presentation characteristics were still terrific, so for those wish that Scott G Series rods were still as slow as the original generation, I would highly recommend the heavier line. Either way, you’ll be impressed with how the GT 7104-4 casts and fishes. It has enough touch to fish the smallest dry flies with maximum aesthetics, yet plenty of backbone for dry-dropper fishing on small water and enough in the butt section for landing larger fish.

   The GT Series 7104/4 is a very fun small water rod. As you might imagine from the length, it’s incredibly light in hand and is stiffer than the longer GT rods. Unlike most Scott trout rods, these shorter rods tend to favor a quicker, more aggressive casting stroke. You can still operate the rod with a slower stroke, but if you quicken the tempo your loops close up and the rod behaves better. I could see myself fishing this rod on small water for large, technical fish. Though this is unequivocally a dry fly rod, it has enough lower end power and a stiff enough tip to handle weighted flies. If you’re in the market for a short 4wt for bigger fish in tight quarters, this rod should absolutely be on your radar. I’ve played around with several lines on this rod and my favorite all around line is the SA Amplitude Trout Expert WF4F.
