  1. A purposeful fly rod with classic Winston characteristics, the Air 2 Reach 10’ 5-weight has a medium-fast action with a slightly stiff tip that drives through each cast to deliver the payload efficiently, whether roll casting a double nymph rig across heavy currents or slinging a full sinking line on your favorite stillwater. I cast it with an SA Infinity WF5, which loaded the rod effortlessly and cast with long, level, semi-open loops ideal for nymphing.

When the angler goes from a 9’ rod to 10’ rod, the longer rod naturally feels “slower” in action, simply because it takes longer to load and unload. The 10’ “Reach” models in the Air 2 series are unique from the shorter Air 2 models in that they are not “tip casters.” The 10-footers flex deeper, using more of the rod to engage long-bellied lines and gently stroke them across the water. This is the purpose of 10-foot fly rods. Whether overhead casting, roll casting or working single-hand Spey techniques, they provide more reach for the cast and subsequent line control techniques. The Reach 10’ 5-weight feels longer and heavier than its shorter cousins, but distinctly a member of the same family. The resilience, stability and bottom end power make this a lethal fishing tool.

  2. This is the 10 foot 5 weight for the angler that appreciates true feeling and nuance. The Air 2 Reach 10′ 5 weight has a tremendous sensation of the load building while you’re casting. The blank has the springy something like its Air 2 family members. In a 10 foot length, you get a whole lot of that wonderfully progressive feeling of the rod loading and releasing the line. It rewards good timing and an understanding of the line loading the blank, but this rod is an easy read, providing the angler direct and clear feedback. This rod isn’t automatic, but it is easy to understand. Lots of loop control with an SA Infinity or a Rio Gold XP. The XP lightens up the rod a touch and brought out a shade more playfulness. The Infinity delivers the fly with a little more energy and loads the blank a bit more. I like both lines for all around work given this rod’s purpose, but the XP was a little more fun in my hands. The build quality of this rod is exceptional, like all Winston rods. The hardware is the same uplocking high polish with a peppered cork fighting butt as the Air 2 Max. There are lighter 10 foot 5 weights out there, but none that savor the act of casting as this one.
