Reviews

  1. This rod feels very different from the other Helios F rods. It has a very distinct hinge point and is a lot more springy than the other models. This is a great rod for smaller water and has a little more gas than the 9-foot version, giving you the ability to fish slightly heavier flies. It takes a little while to get used to from a casting standpoint. The fly line comes out of the tip of the rod with a lot of heat so it’s important to keep your loop high so it doesn’t nosedive on the water in front of you. I tried out a couple different lines on this rod and liked the Rio Elite Technical Trout WF4F best.

  2. This is a unique rod and unlike any other rod in its class I can think of. The taper on the Helios F 8’6” 4 weight feels purposefully light, playful and easy by design, fun and automatic with a very prescribed casting profile. The taper is loose with a bunch of noticeable bend, but the tip remains in line with the butt and the rod feels like it is stable just above the point of being bouncy. I don’t think a casting instructor will gravitate toward this rod, but I do believe this is something that anglers ascending the learning curve should pay attention to. This is a loose and playful light rod that won’t punish a caster with softer sense of timing, proper rod load, or whoever reads this and says, “what the heck is this guy talking about?” I think lighter lines like an SA Trout or a Rio Tech Trout are better lines for this rod. Go cast this rod and see what you think, it would not surprise me if a lot of anglers found this rod to be something that helps them have more fun on the water and help them understand a little more about our sport.

  3. This model is undeniably light in hand and springy in character, but feels a bit bouncy with an SA Trout Taper or Rio Technical Trout. It casts with great line speed from 20-40 feet, a useful distance for fishing dry flies on a freestone or spring creek, but I wish it were smoother through the casting stroke, more connected to its fly line. I’ll keep experimenting to determine whether a heavier line, like the Rio Gold XP, or shorter head, like the SA Trout Standard, might bring the best out of this 4-weight.
