Reviews

  1. The basic actions of the Centric 1004-4 and 1005-4 are ideal for modern purposes. They feel light and cast with a progressive fast action that stiffens in the mid section to hold up a really long fly line. Euro nymphers and technical lake anglers will love the sensitivity in the tips, but these rods have plenty of command for casting from a float tube, canoe, or while standing waist deep in a big river high stick nymphing scenario. They will also be excellent with sink tip lines, possessing plenty of backbone to haul a sunken line to the surface and begin the next cast. By an order of magnitude, these are the best 10’ trout rods Scott has ever designed. I cast them with several fly lines and couldn’t find a bad pairing. In pure casting terms, I prefer the SA Infinity Taper, the long belly of which carries flat and straight, ultimately shooting well into the backing.

  2. This Scott Centric 1004-4 is a major competitor to my favorite 10’ 4wt, the NRX+. When pairing this Centric with a Rio Elite Technical Trout, it becomes a beautiful 10’ overhead casting rod. It is smooth, it flexes very evenly and is not a rod that I wanted to set down. It is heavy. With that being said, I would feel very comfortable and confident nymphing my favorite shelf all day with this rod, on a specific river that I have in mind. Great tool for mending when your indicator is working a seam that is laughably far away.

  3. The new 10-foot Centric rods from Scott are great. They aren’t quite as stiff as the Radian 10-footers and have superior feel. The 1004 is a great overhead caster that is a killer all around 10-foot 4wt. It throws a wonderfully tight loop at nearly all distances and is nice and powerful. This is a great big water nymphing rod that is still able to throw a small dry with good presentation if the heads come up. I cast a handful of different fly lines on this rod and it handled them all pretty well. My favorite from a pure casting standpoint is the Rio Elite Technical Trout. With this line the rod is quickened up just a bit and throws really tight loops. If you’re using the rod with heavier rigs consider the Rio Elite Gold for a little more mass up front.
