Reviews

  1. Since nobody wants a medium-action 10-weight, Scott scrapped its original prototype in favor of this warhorse. The Wave 9010-4 is fully up to the task for tarpon, large permit, false albacore, dorado, roosterfish and top end stripers. It fires heavy-headed lines with line speed and stability. It fishes high in its line class without feeling heavy. Casting is super intuitive with the Rio Flats Pro, SA Grand Slam, Rio Elite Permit, Cortland Crystal saltwater lines as well as every version of a tarpon taper. Every angler will be impressed with this fly rod.

  2. Of the higher line weight Wave rods this has to be the sweetest caster in the bunch. It forms dagger loops almost immediately with a small amount of line out and holds that loop shape well past the head of the fly line. This is a rod that feels like a higher end saltwater rod in terms of power but still has great feel and touch. It is very easy to cast and does a lot of the work for the caster. With the right line pairing the rod loads very well in close and is as accurate as the 10wt Sector. It will make a great permit rod and would be a stellar light-duty tarpon stick. My favorite line to pair with this rod is the Rio Elite Flats Pro WF10F. The rod handles the heavier line and still holds a very tight loop. If you plan on exclusively targeting permit with this rod the Rio Elite Permit WF10F would be another great choice.

  3. The Scott Wave 9010/4 is easy casting, smooth and confident. The 9010 has that same approachable character of the 908. A 10-weight is a big fly rod and for most of us, this is where the casting gets serious. The Wave 9010/4 takes some of the sting out of casting the bigger rods. The Rio Flats Pro WF10F felt so perfect on this rod. Confident control with even and welcoming load to the blank produced loops that carried energy smoothly down range with excellent turnover. The rod really finished the cast well at all distances. Pickup power is extraordinary. The higher Wave line weights seem to pick up more line than one would expect and control it on the delivery. They give you the sense that this is built into their DNA. Simply put, this is the easiest casting saltwater 10-weight I’ve picked up and perfect rod for an angler filling a gap in their quiver or an extra weapon for hard pulling fish.
