   I want to begin with saying that I have a problem. Many problems in fact, but this particular one
   stems from being handed the best trout Spey rod I have cast, and having to give it back to the
   guy that made it for scientific purposes. That rod is the Scott Swing 1142. I’ve been a committed
   two handed trout angler since the 2010s, and this is the finest and most perfectly tapered soft
   hackle rod I have been able to fish. I have favorites elsewhere in the higher line weights, but I
   will say again, this is the best casting and fishing two handed rod for small flies. The grain
   window for Scandi lines is 180 to 200 grains and the grain window for Skagit lines is 200 to 220
   grains. I fished the following lines on the Scott Swing 1142: Rio Elite Trout Spey 190 grains, Rio
   Elite Skagit Mini Max Power 200 grains, SA Spey Lite Scandi 180 grains, and a Rio Scandi Body in
   210 and 220. I prefer the Scandi or Trout Spey style tapers overall, 180 to 200 grains and a head
   length between 20 and 23 feet. The Rio Elite Mini Max Skagit 200 grains is a great option if you
   want to throw small and light streamers on the rod or larger traditional wet flies.

   The 1142 is not your big fly streamer swing rod, but it shouldn’t be. I was impressed with the range of the
   rod and how well it cast the condensed mini Skagit head. Soft hackle performance is the stuff of
   legend and this is the only 2 weight trout Spey rod that I can truly yard on without compromise.
   I was not limited by distance, only how many coils of line I could control during the cast. This
   rod has range and a decisive but delicate touch. The taper in the upper third of the rod
   adamantly forms the loop and sends it out and away. It is remarkably light given the longer length,
   and unbelievably stable. I will fish this rod for many years with a partridge and chartreuse or a
   shakey beeley, and I guarantee I will be smiling.
